Hair tutorial by claucat

I'd love to see the dolls if you use it, so feel free to e-mail them to me. :D

First step: the hair outline:
Things to remember:
- A good outline is important for the whole look of the hair, so give it some thought.
- The outline of the hair shouldn't be confused with the actual head of the base. All hair has volume, and looks better with volume. I tend to overdo volumes, but it's up to you how much you give.

Step two: Basic burning:
Fill the outline with a solid color, and then with a wide and soft brush, burn the base of the hair (the roots) and the surroundings in a very vague way (use a soft brush around 35 pixels wide, set to midtones and opacity 80%). Make sure that the hair at the sides of the neck is darker, to give the feeling of depth.

You should end up having something like that.

Step three: More intricate burning.:
- Use a 1px brush to burn (midtones - 100%) the outlines of the hair, and draw big thick strands of hair. Like this:

You should end up with something like this. DONT make the strands of hair too thin; all in all, it still looks pretty crappy.

Step four: Dodging.:
Ah, let's get to it then!
Use a 1px wide soft brush, set to Dodging midtones (100%), and do individual hair, respecting the flow of said hair, within the huge strands you burned before. Like this:

Step five: Pushing your dark values.:
Basically, use a large (35px) brush to burn (midtones, 85%) and burn the roots a bit more, and the base and the surroundings, to give it more depth. It should end like this:

Step six: Shadow burning (importantisimo).:
Shadow burning! My one true love. With a burning soft brush set to 1px in size, and around 70% in intensity, start doing the same in step two, only make sure that you're burning right in the middle of the thin dodged lines. (Shadow burning is a very generous tool, it doesn't have to be perfect, but it does have to go with the flow). You should end up with something like this:

Yay it's shaping up! But it's not done yet, it needs to shine :D

Step seven: Dodging set to HIGHLIGHT:
With a thick and soft brush, around... say, 27px, set it to 100% intensity, and dodge in the top of the head, in a semi circular way, as you think the light would hit it. But don't be scared to push your light values, and if you want a bit more of shine, do it again, only with a diminished intensity (say... 20%? Just muck with it.)
You should have this:

Step eight: Mucking with it.:
If you feel you can do more, do it. Burn with a brush set to MIDTONES the roots a bit more, or the around it. If you're following this in Photoshop, you can duplicate the layer, and set the copy to soft light. You should end up with something extra shiny and pretty, like this:

And you're done!
